DSE workstation assessments for small businesses

An often overlooked area in most small businesses, a DSE assessment or Workstation assessment as they are sometimes called, is essentially a risk assessment for someone who uses a computer for the majority of their work. It may seem trivial compared to some workplace hazards, but almost 75% of DSE users in a recent survey report health issues attributed directly to their work - and if those injuries (mainly back and neck pain) become more severe, your small business (or you as the owner) could be liable for prosecution, fines and compensation if you haven't taken the appropriate precautions.

How do the DSE regulations affect my small business?

The Display Screen Equipment regulations (2002) place certain requirements on a small business to ensure that the equipment they provide for staff is suitable; that they assess the hazards associated with using the equipment (how is it used, duration of use, type of user, etc) and that they provide sufficient information and advice to DSE users.

How we can help

Our DSE assessments use our own online system that your staff complete whilst being observed by one of our trained assessors, this allows them to see your staff using their workstation, make an assessment of their needs and an assessment of the general office environment which will then be combined with your staff members responses into your final report. A typical DSE assessment day would consist of the following:

1. Overview of the regulations and requirements to the management or owner.
2. Staff briefing on how they will be assessed
3. Individual assessment and training of each member of staff
4. Initial review of findings with the management or owner

Following our visit, we will compile a full report of our findings along with recommendations to help you improve the way you work and to enable your small business to comply with the DSE regulations (2002) - we often find that the financial cost of these changes is very small but they can have a significant effect on the well being and productivity of your office based staff.
